Most of the youth in DJJ’s facilities are housed in our secure facilities, including evaluation centers, pre-trial juvenile detention facility and our long-term commitment facility.

Regional Evaluation Centers

Our regional evaluation centers provide comprehensive psychological, social and educational assessments, performed by a multi-disciplinary team.

If the youth has been found guilty, these evaluations guide the court’s disposition of cases. If the youth has already been committed to DJJ by court order, these evaluations are used to determine an appropriate treatment and housing assignment.

By law, the length of stay for youth undergoing a secure evaluation cannot exceed 45 days.

Our three regional evaluation centers are Coastal (in Ridgeville, SC), Midlands (in Columbia, SC) and Upstate (in Union, SC).

Juvenile Detention Center

DJJ’s Juvenile Detention Center is a centralized pre-trial detention facility, serving juveniles from most of South Carolina's 46 counties (several counties, including Richland and Charleston, operate their own long-term and short-term detention facilities).

The Detention Center is a secure, short-term facility. It provides custodial care and acute treatment to male and female youth, ages 11+, who:

  • Have been detained by law enforcement for alleged offenses committed before their 18th birthday.
  • Have been ordered to cooperate with a secure evaluation prior to disposition.
  • Are awaiting trial on serious and violent charges.

Broad River Road Complex (BRRC)

The Broad River Road Complex in Columbia is the agency’s long-term commitment facility for adjudicated youth (youth who have been convicted of crimes). The complex offers programs for boys and girls of different backgrounds and needs and is home to the DJJ’s fully accredited school.

In addition to school and career programs, BRRC offers social work and psychology services, treatment planning, psychiatry services, a full infirmary for health care needs, gyms, open fields, a game room, recreation and various rehabilitative programs.
