Creating a network of support inside and outside of our facilities is vital to our youth’s rehabilitation progress. You – your love, support and involvement – may be the most crucial part of that rehabilitation.

Visitation

We strongly encourage parents and guardians to visit when they can. If you cannot make it during normal visiting hours, a special visit may be able to be arranged via your child’s assigned Social Worker.

Full details about visitation hours, who is eligible for visitation and contraband, please check our visitation page

Sending Mail

Youth at our secure facilities are encouraged to write to family. We also encourage families to write to their children. Mail is not censored, but we do open mail and check for items that they cannot have.

Sick Call Request

Parents may submit a request for a medical examination or for family support via our Sick Call Request Form. Note: This form can also be used to submit a grievance.

Grievances

The Youth Grievances & Family Support office helps youth under DJJ’s supervision by:

  • Being an impartial advocate for youth,
  • Investigating and resolving complaints and concerns,
  • Acting as a point of contact for anyone interested in reporting complaints and concerns, and
  • Assisting and guardians who have questions or concerns.

Please contact us immediately if you have a legitimate concern about:

  • physical and sexual abuse
  • threats
  • harassment
  • medical or mental health treatment

If you contact Youth Grievances and Family Support, you’ll be asked for the following information:

  • Your Name
  • Your Phone Number
  • Your Relationship with the Youth
  • Name of the Youth
  • Complete Birthday of the Youth
  • Location of the Youth

Submit a Grievance

There are multiple ways to submit a grievance. You can submit the form above, call us at 803-896-5943 or email us at letstalk@djj.sc.gov.

Note: No one can intimidate or retaliate against you for making a grievance. If you feel you are being targeted, bullied or harassed for filing a grievance, report any retaliation and/or intimidation to the Director of Youth Grievance or the Office of Inspector General’s Office immediately.

What happens after I report a grievance?

Every grievance is reviewed and assessed. A return phone call is made to anyone who contacts Youth Grievances and Family Support to inform them of actions taken to resolve an issue or address a concern.

When should I contact the Office of Inspector General (OIG)?

The OIG should not be used to bypass or avoid the grievance process.

If you have contacted our office and you feel that we haven’t satisfactorily resolved your complaint, you may then submit a compliant to the Office of the Inspector General (OIG).

Your compliant can be submitted by written letter or by calling the OIG. Once your complaint is received and reviewed, the OIG will further assist you and make every effort to address your concerns.
